There was comedy and drama, as well as crime thrillers by the lorryload, and sci-fi and fantasy coming by the… much smaller lorryload. There’s no question that a number of Marvel properties, ranging from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings to She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, have clearly suffered from distinct drops in quality visuals, a problem that has plagued many MCU titles. On the other hand, the latest MCU offering, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, has some of the best VFX work seen in a Marvel property in a long time. It should be noted that the problem isn’t just with Marvel Studios, although that company is front and center because of the sheer volume of content it has generated over the last few years....

Black Widow is the first Marvel Studios release to have an opening credits sequence since 2010’s Iron Man 2. Which by itself is kind of nice. After all, both movies bookend Scarlett Johansson’s tenure in the role of Natasha Romanoff. Yet when watching the opening moments of Marvel’s latest adventure, the decision to include an ominous montage of young Nat’s childhood after the movie’s brutal cold open is about more than creating symmetry with the past; it fills in the most mysterious Avenger’s blindspots… and reveals the red in her ledger is also our own....

Coming to Britbox in the UK will be all four seasons of Terry Nation’s Blake’s 7 plus all three seasons of Nation’s post-apocalyptic Survivors joining at the later date of Thursday the 17th of September. There’ll also be 1967’s Quatermass and the Pit, plus a good portion of 1961’s The Avengers, Hammer’s 1966 One Million Years BC, with the terrific, weird Nic Roeg/David Bowie film The Man Who Fell to Earth thrown in for good measure....

If you think our sex education could be better today (which you should), then Bridgerton‘s depiction of Daphne’s pre-marital lack of knowledge around sex may astound you. In the first season of the delightful romance drama, Daphne has to find out about masturbation from Simon and heads into her wedding night knowing next to nothing about what might happen between two adults in lust, aside from the fact that it has something to do with the act of having children....

Bridgerton season 2’s decision to cast Kate, Edwina, and Lady Mary from the book series as South Asian women is a rarity for Regency-era productions. But, just as Bridgerton season 1 paved the way for more Black representation in UK period dramas, the show’s second season may have done the same four South Asian representation. While the show’s depiction of the Sharma family was received by some South Asian viewers in varying ways (more on that later), it does present a welcome evolution for this kind of storytelling....

Besides, after all these years, there is still a special something about the Alien franchise that has never faded away. Even though recent Alien movies failed to capture even a hint of what made Alien and Aliens two of the finest sci-fi films ever made, nothing has truly diminished the shine of their gold standard status. Mind you, it hasn’t been all bad. 2014’s Alien Isolation, for instance, is widely considered to be one of the scariest horror games ever made as well as one of the rare instances of a game based on a movie that is entertaining in its own right while perfectly capturing the spirit of the movie itself....
